Goldwork beetle brooches workshop with Hannah Mansfield
Workshop description
In this workshop you will learn how to embroider goldwork beetles with specialist
goldwork wires. You will be able to choose from a selection of designs to embroider. The
workshop will start with an explanation of how to apply padding to create raised
embroidery. You will then be shown how to use different goldwork wires to embroider
your beetle, this will include the technique of applying pearl purl wire to create outlines
and the filling techniques, cutwork and chipping, using purl wire. You will be able to
customise your beetle by choosing the colours and techniques you apply to them. Finally
you will learn how to make your finished beetle into a neatly finished brooch.
Materials requirements:
• A selection of goldwork wires in gold and silver or colours. You will require around 1g of
pearl purl (around no.1 thickness) and a selection of either smooth, rough or check purls
in small quantities (around no.8 thickness).
• Yellow, white and dark blue cotton sewing thread
• Sharps and bead needles
• Dark blue wool felt, 20x20cm and 6x6cm
• Yellow and white felt for padding, 10x10cm
• Gold plated brooch pin, 20mm
You will also need the following equipment:
5 inch embroidery hoop
Embroidery scissors
Hoop clamp (seat or table)
Velvet board and goldwork scissors (optional)
Kits including goldwork wires, threads, needles, a brooch pin and fabric will be available at
the workshop.
Additional materials such as goldwork wires in gold, silver and colours and goldwork
scissors will be available for purchase at the workshop.
